(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump on Friday announced the deployment of two U.S. nuclear submarines to undisclosed locations in response to what he called “highly provocative statements” made by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council.

“Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev… I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

The move came after Medvedev publicly mocked Trump’s updated deadline for Russia to end the war in Ukraine — now reduced from 50 to just 10 days — calling it “a step toward war” and warning that such ultimatums could provoke broader conflict. “Trump’s playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10… Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country,” Medvedev wrote earlier this week on X.

Trump, who has grown increasingly frustrated with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s refusal to negotiate, initially gave Moscow until early September to reach a peace deal or face “severe tariffs.” But on Monday, speaking from Scotland, Trump said the wait was futile. “I’m going to make a new deadline — about 10 or 12 days from today. There’s no reason for waiting,” he said.

The escalating rhetoric comes amid a sharp uptick in violence. On Thursday, Russia launched a massive aerial assault against Ukraine, firing more than 300 drones and several ballistic missiles across the country. The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed the attacks caused extensive damage, and casualties are still being assessed.

Trump also cited sobering casualty estimates as part of his justification for heightened military readiness. “I have just been informed that almost 20,000 Russian soldiers died this month in the ridiculous war with Ukraine. Russia has lost 112,500 soldiers since the beginning of the year,” Trump posted on Friday. “Ukraine, however, has also suffered greatly… This is a war that should have never happened — this is Biden’s war, not ‘Trump’s.’ I’m just here to see if I can stop it.”

Asked by reporters outside the White House where the submarines were headed, Trump declined to give specifics. “We had to do that. A threat was made, and we didn’t think it was appropriate. So I have to be very careful,” he said. “When you talk about nuclear, we have to be prepared. And we’re totally prepared.”

In a follow-up interview with Newsmax, Trump elaborated, saying the submarines were being moved “closer to Russia” and that U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff would be heading to Moscow in the coming days to press for a ceasefire. Trump reiterated that if no deal is reached, new sanctions against Russia would be imposed immediately following the 10-day deadline.

Medvedev, who served as Russia’s president from 2008 to 2012 while Vladimir Putin temporarily stepped aside, has become known for his inflammatory statements since the outbreak of war in 2022. Once seen as a moderate reformer, Medvedev has embraced hardline rhetoric and frequently issues nuclear threats via social media — a shift that analysts believe is aimed at shoring up his influence with the Kremlin’s hawkish factions.

The back-and-forth between Trump and Medvedev has further strained already fragile U.S.-Russia relations. Earlier this week, Trump had labeled Medvedev a “failed former president of Russia” and warned him to “watch his words.” Medvedev fired back, claiming “Russia is right on everything and will continue to go its own way.”

As tensions climb, the presence of American nuclear submarines in unspecified regions signals a pointed warning to Moscow that Trump is prepared to act if diplomatic posturing crosses into real escalation. “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences,” Trump said. “I hope this will not be one of those instances.”
