AMSTERDAM (Worthy News) – The murder of 17-year-old Lisa has shocked the Netherlands and reignited debate over migration policy after police confirmed that the 22-year-old suspect was an asylum seeker living in a government-run reception center.

Authorities said the man was detained at a Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) facility in Amsterdam, the capital.

He is also under investigation for a separate sexual assault in the days before Lisa’s death and an attempted assault, Worthy News learned.

Lisa’s killing prompted grief and anger nationwide, with women’s groups warning of rising insecurity.

Dutch media reported that parents expressed fear about their daughters’ safety, calling the case “every parent’s nightmare.”

LISA’S LAST HOURS

Lisa, a recent graduate of Spinoza20First secondary school, reportedly left Amsterdam’s Leidseplein entertainment district around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, after saying goodbye to friends.

Concerned her electric bike might be stolen, she chose to cycle home alone to her family in the small town of Abcoude, nearly 16 kilometers (10 miles) southeast of Amsterdam, according to investigators.

On the way, she noticed someone was following her and called the national emergency number 112, police said.

Police traced her phone and dispatched officers. However, by 4:15 a.m., she was found lifeless by the roadside in the Duivendrecht area near Amsterdam’s Johan Cruijff Arena, the home stadium of soccer club Ajax.

Authorities confirmed she had suffered multiple stab wounds, including slashes to her neck. Police later raided the COA facility and detained the suspect.

CHARGED WITH MURDER

“The suspect will face a primary charge of murder for the death of the teen, and a primary charge of rape for the incident a week ago,” explained Amsterdam Chief Prosecutor René de Beukelaer at a press conference.

It was not yet clear what charge he would face for another incident, which was initially investigated as “an attempted robbery.”

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema, who was sitting alongside the prosecutor, condemned the “shocking level of violence that the three women faced” and urged other victims to come forward.

De Beukelaer told reporters that the detained man remained in custody and was due before a magistrate on Monday.

Although the suspect’s nationality was not disclosed, his arrest immediately fueled debate about migration and asylum policies.

ISLAMIC COUNTRIES MENTIONED

Critics cited the influx of young men from Islamic countries as a source of insecurity for women and girls.

Anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders linked the crime directly to migration. On social media, he wrote in Dutch: “Suspect in vile murder of Lisa and rape of woman is asylum seeker.”

His Party for Freedom (PVV) left the government amid political tensions over asylum policies. Wilders and other critics argue that arrivals from countries with different cultural views on women’s rights threaten women’s safety.

On social media, women also questioned the focus on migration, saying attackers include both native Dutch and asylum-seeking men.

“This happens in every circle, from every background,” acknowledged Dilan Yeşilgöz, leader of the ruling conservative-liberal People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD).

CULTURE QUESTIONS REMAIN

However, Yeşilgöz, who was born in Muslim-majority Turkey, added: “At the same time, thousands of young single men have come to our country in recent decades from cultures that have little regard for women’s rights. Anyone who claims that increasing insecurity for women has nothing to do with migration is ignoring part of the problem.”

Statistics underscore her concern. In 2022, 48 women were murdered in the Netherlands, half by partners, according to the Dutch Central Agency for Statistics (CBS).

Reported rapes roughly doubled over the last decade, from 1,265 cases in 2015 to at least 2,415 in 2023, CBS data showed.

Research from Erasmus University Rotterdam found that “41 percent of Dutch women have experienced physical or sexual violence. That is higher than the European average of 30.7 percent.”

Other studies suggest nearly half of Dutch women — 45 percent — report experiencing violence in their lifetime in this nation of 18 million people.

CALLS FOR ACTION

Wilders and some researchers have linked much of the violence to Muslim men with a migration background, though Dutch police do not consistently release such details. Authorities say hundreds of thousands of migrants arrive annually in the Netherlands, many seeking asylum, a theme that is likely to dominate parliamentary elections in October.

Yet the migration debate has done little to ease the pain of those mourning Lisa, whose last name wasn’t released for privacy reasons.

Dutch actress and author Nienke ’s Gravemade wrote a widely shared poem on Instagram under the hashtag #reclaimthenight, declaring that women have the right to feel safe at any hour.

“The red handbag. I keep thinking about the red handbag. How it dangled from her handlebars as she rode through the night. A night that belonged to her, too, because we all have 24 hours in our day. Twenty-four hours that we are free to use how and where we choose,” ’s Gravemade wrote.

On the streets, young women voiced fears. “I carry hairspray to defend myself,” one girl said, noting strict firearms laws in the Netherlands.

Mayor Halsema, herself a mother, called the murder “terrible and unforgivable.” She said Lisa “had the world at her feet, but her loved ones will no longer see her chase her dreams.”

“This is the greatest fear of every woman and every parent,” Halsema added. “Now thousands are demanding to take back the night, to bike, to study, to enjoy life and be free in the city without fear.” Yeşilgöz agreed, saying, “Our bodies are ours. Our streets are ours. The night is ours. We need concrete actions and laws that protect us — and fast.”
