SHANGHAI/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Chinese President Xi Jinping warmly embraced Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, pledging closer cooperation in defiance of U.S. sanctions over Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

The display of unity came on the sidelines of a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), where leaders also discussed peace efforts in Ukraine, Armenia-Azerbaijan tensions, unrest in Syria, and Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told Putin that Ankara was working “to find a fair and lasting end to the war” in Ukraine. He cited talks hosted in Istanbul as contributing to peace efforts after U.S. President Donald J. Trump failed to secure a ceasefire.

Xi, seen as China’s leader-for-life, urged SCO members to resist “bullying behavior” from the West, promising economic support for fellow nations. Modi, who recently faced 50 percent U.S. tariffs on Indian goods, joined Putin in highlighting closer ties with China despite past border clashes.

The three leaders — symbolized by China’s dragon, India’s elephant, and Russia’s bear — projected economic and political unity, even as Putin again blamed the West for provoking Europe’s bloodiest war since World War II.

The SCO summit gathered 10 member states and 16 dialogue partners, including North Korea’s Kim Jong Un and Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, underscoring Beijing’s bid to expand its influence among what it calls the “Global South.”
