Four-Year Manhunt Ends Deadly In New Zealand; Fugitive Father Killed, Children Safe
by Stefan J. Bos, Worthy News Chief International Correspondent
WELLINGTON (Worthy News) – A four-year manhunt ended tragically Monday when New Zealand police fatally shot fugitive father Tom Phillips during a shoot-out. All three of his children, now aged 9, 10, and 12, have been found safe after disappearing with him in late 2021.
The confrontation occurred in Piopio, a small rural town in New Zealand’s Waikato region, roughly halfway between the country’s largest city, Auckland, and the capital, Wellington, on the North Island.
Police said the clash began after officers responded to a burglary at an agricultural supply store around 2:30 a.m. local time Monday.
Two suspects fled on a quad bike before officers deployed spikes to halt them, according to investigators.
Once stopped, Phillips allegedly opened fire with a high-powered rifle, critically injuring one officer. Police returned fire, killing him at the scene, officials said.
One child was reportedly present during the incident and taken into custody, providing key information. Later in the day, the two other children were discovered unharmed at a remote campsite roughly two kilometers (about 1.2 miles) away, police said.
Law Enforcement & Community Impact
Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers described the incident as “deeply traumatic.” She confirmed the children were uninjured and undergoing medical checks. The wounded officer was in surgery with what authorities called survivable injuries.
GRIPPING THE NATION
The Phillips case had gripped the nation, as the father evaded capture for years in the rugged, forested Waikato bush, an area known for its difficult terrain and remote settlements.
The children’s mother, identified publicly as Cat, expressed relief and sorrow. “Our hope has always been that the children could be returned in a peaceful and safe way for everyone involved,” she said, adding she was saddened by the events but grateful the ordeal was over.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon called the day “sad and absolutely tragic,” stressing it was not the outcome anyone had hoped for. The mayor of Waitomo described it as the worst possible result, voicing concern for the children and the wider community.
Phillips disappeared in December 2021 from the coastal settlement of Marokopa, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Piopio, following a custody dispute. Despite extensive searches and a public reward for information, he and the children eluded authorities for years. Surveillance footage and witness accounts tied him to several crimes, including a burglary last month in which at least one child was present.
Police said forensic investigations are underway at the sites connected to the case.
Authorities pledged support for the children’s reintegration, with Rogers noting that while the immediate crisis has ended, the young survivors face a long journey toward stability and healing.
