BRUSSELS/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) –  The European Union’s executive arm, the European Commission, was set to unveil a sweeping new counter-drone initiative Thursday, following a string of suspected Russian drone violations in the airspace of several EU nations.

The proposal, part of a wider defense “roadmap,” is expected to outline a European Drone Defence Initiative aiming for new anti-drone systems to reach initial capability by the end of next year and full operational status by late 2027, according to officials familiar with the deliberations.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said last month it was time for Europe to build a “drone wall” to safeguard its eastern flank. Her remarks came just hours after roughly 20 Russian drones were reported to have entered Polish airspace, prompting renewed alarm across the bloc.

Separately, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, a former intelligence chief, confirmed that drones had also violated the airspace of at least eight other European nations, including the Netherlands.

The full number of incursions may be even higher. Reports of drone sightings or airspace disruptions have emerged in Romania, Estonia, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Denmark, Norway, and France. At the same time, Sweden and Finland have cited unidentified drone activity over critical infrastructure.

BROADER DEFENSE STRATEGY

Amid the surge in drone incidents, EU officials say the bloc’s new defense plan has evolved into a continent-wide strategy linking radar networks, interception systems, and artificial-intelligence-based tracking tools under the banner of a “European Drone Defence Initiative.”

The plan seeks to unify and finance efforts across member states to detect, deter, and destroy hostile drones.

The announcement follows remarks by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who told defense ministers on Wednesday that the alliance and the EU are now jointly developing a “drone wall” to protect member nations from aerial incursions.

While stressing that NATO will lead on military capabilities, Rutte said the EU’s financial and regulatory power was essential to fund multibillion-euro operations and coordinate procurement among member states.
