YEREVAN/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Concerns mounted Monday over the fate of a bishop and 12 clergymen of the Armenian Apostolic Church who were detained amid a deepening standoff between church leaders and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s government — a dispute unfolding as Christians in the region face growing pressure.
Bishop Mkrtich Proshyan of the Diocese of Aragatsotn was charged with coercing citizens to attend public gatherings, obstructing electoral rights, and large-scale embezzlement, Armenia’s Investigative Committee confirmed. Twelve priests from his diocese were also detained, though their whereabouts remain unclear.
The Committee said the investigation follows 2021 allegations that clergy pressured parishioners to join anti-government rallies. Authorities also accused the bishop of financial misconduct — claims his supporters call fabricated.
The Armenian Apostolic Church — the world’s oldest national church — denounced the arrests as politically motivated, calling them part of a “systematic campaign” to silence dissent.
“There is obvious malicious intent to hinder the normal activities of the Church,” the Church said in a statement quoted by Armenpress and the Associated Press.
GROWING PRESSURE
The arrests highlight rising tension between Armenia’s secular government and its influential Christian institutions.
The dispute intensified after Pashinyan’s decision to transfer several border villages to Azerbaijan Following the 2023 Nagorno-Karabakh area offensive, a move that Christian leaders labeled a betrayal of Armenia’s spiritual and national identity.
Human-rights organizations warn that the crisis has endangered the region’s Christian heritage.
Following Azerbaijan’s takeover of Nagorno-Karabakh, the European Centre for Law & Justice accused Baku of “cultural genocide” for destroying churches and religious monuments.
Proshyan’s detention follows the September sentencing of Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan to two years in prison for allegedly calling for the government’s overthrow — a case the Church described as “politically motivated.” Another senior cleric, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, was detained earlier this year on accusations of plotting a coup, which his legal team dismissed as fabricated.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has frequently clashed with the Church’s leadership, even accusing Catholicos Karekin II, head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, of misconduct and urging him to resign.
Lebanon-based Church leader Catholicos Aram I of the Great House of Cilicia urged the Armenian government to release detained clergy and “restore healthy church-state relations.”
Despite recent meetings between Church envoys and government officials, tensions remain unresolved.
Analysts warn that Armenia — the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion in 301 A.D. — is entering a period of unprecedented strain between state authority and the Church.
Critics say political reforms collide with the nation’s centuries-old religious and Christian identity.
