(Worthy News) – President Donald J. Trump announced Thursday that he is immediately terminating trade negotiations with Canada after the Ontario provincial government launched an anti-tariff advertisement featuring what the Ronald Reagan Foundation has confirmed to be a manipulated audio clip of former President Ronald Reagan.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford promoted the ad on social media, writing, “It’s official: Ontario’s new advertising campaign in the U.S. has launched. Using every tool we have, we’ll never stop making the case against American tariffs on Canada. The way to prosperity is by working together.”

The campaign, reportedly costing $75 million Canadian dollars (about $54 million USD), features Reagan’s 1987 Radio Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade–edited to suggest the late president opposed tariffs.

In his Truth Social post, President Trump called the ad “FAKE” and “egregious,” accusing Canada of attempting to influence the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court case that will determine whether his administration lawfully imposed tariffs on Canadian imports under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

“The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs… Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED,” Trump declared.

Reagan Foundation Responds

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute released a statement confirming that the Ontario government “did not seek nor receive permission” to use or edit Reagan’s speech, and said the ad “misrepresents” his message.

“The ad misrepresents the Presidential Radio Address, and the Government of Ontario did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks,” the statement read. “The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute is reviewing its legal options in this matter.”

Although Reagan was a champion of free trade, he also imposed targeted tariffs—such as his 1987 sanctions on Japanese semiconductors—when foreign trade practices were deemed unfair.

On Friday morning, President Trump thanked the Reagan Foundation for “exposing this FRAUD,” alleging that Canada has “long cheated on tariffs, charging our farmers as much as 400%.”

“CANADA CHEATED AND GOT CAUGHT!!!” Trump wrote. “Canada is trying to illegally influence the United States Supreme Court in one of the most important rulings in the history of our Country.”

The advertisement is scheduled to air on Newsmax, Fox News, Bloomberg, NBC, CBS, CNBC, ESPN, and ABC, according to CBC.

The Trump administration maintains a 35% tariff on certain Canadian goods not covered under the U.S.–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA), citing concerns over trade imbalances, protectionist policies, and illicit drug trafficking across the northern border.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to “double non-U.S. exports” amid growing trade tensions and will join Trump next week at the ASEAN and APEC summits.
