RIYADH/NEW DELHI (Worthy News) – India’s Muslim minority has plunged acter a bus blaze near Medina in Saudi Arabia that killed at least 45 Indian pilgrims, according to Saudi and Indian officials.
As new details emerged of the early Monday inferno, authorities said the bus collided with a fuel tanker while traveling from Mecca to Medina.
The collision triggered a massive fire that engulfed the vehicle within seconds, leaving almost no time for passengers to escape.
Video footage reviewed by Worthy News showed the bus in flames, with emergency teams later finding the vehicle reduced to a charred frame.
SOLE SURVIVOR
Indian and Saudi officials confirmed that only one passenger survived the inferno — 24-year-old Mohammad Abdul Shoaib of Hyderabad — who remains in critical condition at a Saudi hospital.
He escaped after managing to jump from the vehicle at the moment of impact, according to preliminary accounts shared with Indian authorities.
Most of the victims were from Hyderabad, officials said, and included several members of extended families.
Many bodies were reportedly burned beyond recognition, and authorities indicated that DNA testing may be required to complete the identification process.
PILGRIMS RETURNING
The passengers were part of a group performing Umrah, a voluntary Islamic pilgrimage undertaken outside the Hajj season.
According to government data, Saudi Arabia receives more than 16 million Umrah pilgrims annually, in addition to over one million Hajj pilgrims, placing significant pressure on the kingdom’s transportation systems.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences on the social media platform X, saying he was “deeply saddened by the accident in Medina involving Indian nationals” and offered prayers for the injured and bereaved families.
INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY
Authorities in the Indian state of Telangana announced assistance for the families of the victims and said a team would be sent to Saudi Arabia to coordinate with local officials.
Saudi authorities have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the collision and the rapid spread of the fire.
Officials and local media have described the crash as one of the deadliest road accidents involving pilgrims in Saudi Arabia in recent years.
However, the full circumstances are still being examined.
