(Worthy News) – Iran’s powerful Assembly of Experts announced Sunday that Mojtaba Khamenei has been selected as the country’s new supreme leader, replacing his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed during the opening phase of U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28.

The council said it convened an emergency session despite damage to its offices during recent fighting and elected Mojtaba Khamenei by an overwhelming majority. Officials said the rapid decision was intended to prevent a leadership vacuum in the Islamic Republic as the country faces mounting military pressure and internal instability.

Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, has long been considered one of the most influential figures within Iran’s ruling system despite never holding an official government position. For more than two decades he operated behind the scenes as a key gatekeeper in his father’s office and developed close ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which reportedly pushed strongly for his appointment.

However, his rise to power is already proving controversial. Footage circulating on social media showed Iranian citizens chanting “Death to Mojtaba,” while critics within Iran’s clerical establishment have warned that elevating the supreme leader’s son resembles dynastic succession—something traditionally rejected within Shiite political theology and by the founders of the Islamic Republic itself.

U.S. President Donald Trump also reacted sharply to the development, calling Mojtaba Khamenei “unacceptable” and warning that any new Iranian leader would struggle to remain in power without international recognition. Meanwhile, Israel issued warnings that individuals involved in selecting Iran’s next leader could become targets as the conflict continues.

Analysts say Mojtaba Khamenei’s leadership could mark a more hardline phase for Iran. Closely connected to the IRGC and long accused by Western officials of helping suppress protests and influence elections, he is believed to have played a role in shaping Iran’s regional military strategy and nuclear policy.

Prophetic Perspective

Prophecy observers watching the unfolding conflict note that the region historically known as Elam—located in modern-day Iran—is specifically mentioned in the Bible. In Jeremiah 49, the prophet foretold a time when God would “break the bow of Elam” and remove its “kings and officials,” yet also promised that “in the latter days I will restore the fortunes of Elam” (Jeremiah 49:34–39).

Some observers see the rapid turnover of Iranian leadership during the current conflict as potentially aligning with that ancient prophecy. They note how terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah have already seen newly appointed leaders eliminated within days of taking power, raising questions about whether similar instability could unfold within Iran’s own leadership.

While interpretations vary, many believers view these developments through a broader biblical lens — seeing world events as part of God’s unfolding redemptive plan. Scripture ultimately points toward a future when the Lord gathers people from every tribe and nation into His kingdom through Jesus Christ, bringing restoration not only to nations but to the world itself.
