NOORDWIJK, NETHERLANDS (Worthy News) – A powerful thunderstorm system sweeping across Western Europe killed at least one person in the Netherlands, injured several others in Belgium and Germany, and caused widespread damage as nearly 190,000 lightning flashes illuminated the skies, authorities said Saturday.

Dutch police said a 25-year-old woman was killed shortly after midnight when a tree fell onto a car near the village of ’t Haantje in the northern province of Drenthe. She died at the scene.

The storm left a trail of destruction across the Netherlands, where emergency services responded to reports of fallen trees, damaged roofs, flooding, and transport disruptions. In the Dutch coastal town of Noordwijk, residents rushed to safety, Worthy News observed.

At Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, several flights were delayed, while rail services were disrupted after trees and branches fell onto tracks.

The Dutch weather institute KNMI recorded nearly 190,000 lightning flashes across the Netherlands, parts of Belgium and Germany, and the North Sea. Meteorologists said it was one of the most intense thunderstorm outbreaks to affect the region in recent years.

IMPACT ACROSS THE NETHERLANDS

Meteorologist Philippe Schambergen of weather service Buienradar described the storm as exceptional.
“It has been a long time since we saw a thunderstorm complex of this scale move across the Netherlands and cause so much damage,” he said.

Schambergen estimated that some areas experienced more than one lightning flash per second at the height of the storm. Wind gusts reached 70 miles per hour (113 kilometers per hour) near the southwestern port city of Vlissingen and exceeded 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in parts of Drenthe.

Several public events were affected in the Netherlands. In the village of Hollandscheveld, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) northeast of Amsterdam, two trees crashed onto a wedding tent holding about 20 to 25 people, leaving one man with a broken ankle.

At another wedding in the eastern province of Overijssel, near the German border, about 150 guests were forced to evacuate after flooding threatened a reception venue.

Organizers also canceled the Julianapop music festival in Julianadorp, a coastal town near the North Sea in the northern Dutch province of North Holland, citing extensive storm damage that made it unsafe to proceed.

STORM HITS OTHER COUNTRIES

The severe weather also affected neighboring countries.

In Belgium, strong winds damaged property and toppled trees. Emergency services in parts of Flanders received hundreds of calls, including reports of lightning strikes and storm damage.

One man was injured by a roof tile blown loose by the storm.

In Germany, nine people were injured when lightning struck during a handball event in the southwestern town of Rastatt in Baden-Württemberg state. Authorities said none of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries.

Forecasters warned that additional thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds could affect parts of Germany through the weekend.

FRANCE FACES EXTREME HEAT

France also remained on alert as temperatures climbed above 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius), with some regions expected to approach 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius).

Authorities placed dozens of departments under weather warnings and cautioned that the coming days could rank among the hottest ever recorded in the country.

Meteorologists said the combination of unusually high temperatures and unstable atmospheric conditions fueled the violent storms, though they added that a thunderstorm system of this scale is unlikely to return immediately.

However, additional storms remain possible in parts of Western Europe in the coming days.
