PARIS (Worthy News) – The French government faced mounting political pressure Thursday after nearly 3,000 people were evacuated from wildfires in southern France, prompting Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to warn that this year’s fire season had begun weeks earlier than usual following a record-breaking heatwave blamed for killing thousands of people in France and neighboring Spain.

Tourists and local residents fled after a wildfire broke out near the Mediterranean town of Sainte-Marie-la-Mer before spreading to nearby Canet-en-Roussillon.

Firefighters said nearly 3,000 people were evacuated, about half of them from three campsites, while hundreds of mobile homes were destroyed.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries as hundreds of firefighters, backed by water-bombing aircraft, battled the flames amid strong winds and parched vegetation.

EARLY FIRE SEASON

Lecornu said France had already recorded about 7,000 wildfires this season, with some 8,700 hectares (21,500 acres) burned.

“We must acknowledge that they are occurring roughly 15 days to three weeks earlier than the usual periods,” he said after chairing a crisis meeting in Marseille.

The largest blaze, burning across the Aude and Hérault departments, had already scorched about 900 hectares and continued spreading in strong winds.

Authorities warned that another spell of elevated temperatures is expected next week, although forecasters said it should be less intense than the June heatwave.

HEATWAVE TOLL GROWS

French public health authorities estimate the June heatwave contributed to about 1,000 excess deaths in France, while neighboring Spain reported 1,029 excess deaths linked to extreme heat.

The figures highlighted the mounting human cost of increasingly frequent periods of exceptional temperatures across Europe.

France’s Green Party has filed a no-confidence motion against Lecornu’s government, accusing authorities of failing to adequately prepare the country for severe heatwaves and wildfires.

However, the motion is widely viewed as unlikely to succeed without support from other major opposition parties, including the Socialists or the far-right National Rally.

GOVERNMENT FACES PRESSURE

The World Meteorological Organization has warned that extreme heat has major impacts on human health, ecosystems, agriculture, and infrastructure while also worsening wildfire risks.

Plants and vegetation in parts of southern France are under severe water stress, adding to the danger as strong winds blow across the Mediterranean region.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said weather conditions remained “particularly unfavorable” as firefighters worked to prevent flames from spreading near populated and industrial areas.

The fires underscored the growing challenge facing European governments as hotter, drier summers strain emergency services and intensify political pressure over climate preparedness.
