PARSI PARLO, INDIA (Worthy News) – Powerful flash floods have swept away churches, damaged schools and homes, and severed vital transportation routes in a remote border region of northeastern India.
The flooding struck Parsi Parlo in Arunachal Pradesh early Monday after heavy rainfall caused the Kumey River to rise suddenly. The Parsi Parlo Prayer House and several associated buildings were completely destroyed, while the nearby Parsi Parlo Town Baptist Church suffered extensive damage. The Chote Pagam Baptist Church and its boundary wall were also damaged.
St. Thomas Catholic Church was swept away about an hour later. Parish priests were able to rescue sacred items and move them to higher ground before the building collapsed. A nearby school was fully submerged, while the parish residence and convent were badly damaged. The parish serves more than 1,200 Catholics across 14 local communities.
Despite the widespread destruction, church officials said no deaths had been reported.
Floodwaters also inundated government offices, residential buildings and roads. Several bridges collapsed, cutting Parsi Parlo off from the district headquarters and delaying the delivery of emergency supplies. Landslides and soil erosion have further complicated relief efforts.
Christian leaders urged residents to remain calm, avoid unnecessary travel and pray for those affected. Government authorities, police and paramilitary forces were assessing the damage and coordinating relief operations.
The disaster marked the third major flash flood in Arunachal Pradesh within a month, according to local officials.
