WASHINGTON, D.C. (Worthy News) – President Donald Trump’s sweeping “Make D.C. Safe Again” law-enforcement campaign is approaching its first anniversary with more than 16,000 arrests, as the administration says its unprecedented federal-local partnership is changing the security landscape of the nation’s capital.

The D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, launched on August 11, 2025, brought together federal, state and local law-enforcement agencies after Trump declared a crime emergency in Washington and deployed federal agents and National Guard personnel.

According to figures provided to Fox News by the White House, the operation has resulted in the arrests of 35 homicide suspects, more than 100 known gang members and more than 3,200 people on narcotics offenses. Authorities have also seized nearly 2,000 illegal firearms and located 25 missing children who were returned home.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the effort demonstrated what could be accomplished when federal agencies and local law enforcement aggressively coordinate against violent crime.

The Justice Department describes Make D.C. Safe Again as an initiative focused particularly on gun violence, federal firearms violations, tougher prosecution of offenders and detention of defendants accused of serious firearms crimes.

Crime Falls Across Several Major Categories

Official Metropolitan Police Department statistics show substantial declines across several important crime categories.

As of August 10, homicides in Washington were down 31% compared with the same period in 2025, robberies were down 15%, motor vehicle thefts had plunged 53%, thefts from automobiles were down 37%, and total property crime had fallen 23%. Overall reported crime was down 20% year-over-year.

The picture is not uniformly positive. MPD statistics show assaults with a dangerous weapon up 41%, contributing to a 3% increase in total violent crime so far this year.

The broader trend, however, follows a dramatic reduction in crime during 2025. MPD reported that homicides fell from 187 in 2024 to 127 in 2025, while robberies dropped 37%, violent crime fell 29%, and overall crime declined 18%.

The Justice Department credits the federal partnership with helping dismantle gangs and drug-trafficking networks while dramatically increasing prosecution of criminal cases in the District.

‘Those Days Are Over’

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro has characterized the shift as a return to aggressive enforcement after years in which large numbers of cases were not prosecuted.

“These achievements did not happen in a vacuum,” Pirro said earlier this year, crediting policies that allowed authorities to enforce existing laws more aggressively. She warned criminals who considered Washington an easy target that “those days are over.”

The crackdown initially drew fierce opposition from Democratic officials, particularly over Trump’s deployment of the National Guard and expansion of federal involvement in local policing. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser questioned the legality and appropriateness of using the Guard to police the city.

For the Trump administration, however, the first-year results have become a centerpiece of its argument that persistent violent crime is not inevitable—and that sustained enforcement, prosecution and visible policing can restore order even in cities long plagued by crime.

As the D.C. Safe Again initiative enters its second year, the administration says the mission remains straightforward: remove violent offenders, illegal guns and drug traffickers from the streets while making the nation’s capital safer for residents and millions of Americans who visit Washington each year.
