WASHINGTON, D.C. (Worthy News) – President Donald Trump scored a significant legal victory Monday in his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC after a federal judge allowed him to amend his complaint and effectively wiped out the British broadcaster’s pending attempt to have the case dismissed.

U.S. District Judge Roy K. Altman granted Trump’s request to file a First Amended Complaint in Trump v. British Broadcasting Corporation, ruling that the BBC’s previous motion to dismiss was now “moot.” The case centers on a controversial BBC documentary that edited together portions of Trump’s January 6, 2021, speech delivered nearly an hour apart.

BBC Acknowledged Edit Created False Impression

Trump filed the lawsuit in December 2025, seeking $5 billion for defamation and another $5 billion under Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.

At the heart of the dispute is a 2024 BBC Panorama documentary, Trump: A Second Chance?, which combined separate portions of Trump’s January 6 speech in a way that appeared to connect his call to march toward the Capitol directly with his later statement that supporters should “fight like hell.”

The documentary omitted Trump’s explicit call for supporters to make their voices heard “peacefully and patriotically.”

The BBC subsequently apologized and acknowledged that its editing created the mistaken impression that Trump had made a direct call for violent action. However, the broadcaster has denied that the edit legally amounted to defamation and has vowed to defend itself in court.

The controversy became a major crisis for Britain’s publicly funded broadcaster and contributed to the resignations of BBC Director-General Tim Davie and BBC News chief Deborah Turness.

Judge Narrows Scope of Jan. 6 Fight

Trump has also received another potentially important ruling in the litigation.

Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett recently determined that the BBC may investigate how Trump’s January 6 remarks were understood by listeners but may not turn the lawsuit into a wholesale relitigation of everything that occurred at the Capitol that day.

“The full relitigation of Jan. 6 is not at issue,” Lett said during the proceedings, according to Fox News.

That distinction could prove important because Trump’s case focuses on a comparatively narrow question: whether the BBC materially changed the meaning of what the president actually said through its editing.

Trump Seeks to Focus Case on Reputation

The latest ruling also allows Trump’s attorneys to reshape the complaint around alleged damage to his personal reputation rather than financial damage to hundreds of Trump-affiliated businesses.

That distinction became important after the BBC sought extensive financial records from companies held by the Trump family trust. Judge Altman temporarily halted that disclosure, describing Trump’s argument that the amended complaint could eliminate the need for the financial information as “compelling.”

On Monday, Altman went a step further by granting Trump permission to file the amended complaint. The ruling does not determine whether the BBC ultimately defamed Trump, but it keeps the president’s case moving forward while requiring the broadcaster to respond to the newly revised claims.

The BBC maintains that Trump’s lawsuit should fail and has previously challenged whether a Florida court has jurisdiction over a documentary produced and broadcast primarily in Britain. Under U.S. defamation law, Trump, as a public figure, will ultimately face the demanding burden of showing that the allegedly defamatory publication was made with knowledge of falsity or reckless disregard for the truth.

For now, however, the attempt to derail the lawsuit through the BBC’s existing dismissal motion has been erased from the docket, giving Trump an important procedural victory as the $10 billion media battle continues.
