U.S. Sending Fresh Aircraft Carrier to Middle East
by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Worthy News) – The United States is preparing to send the USS George Washington aircraft carrier to the Middle East, replacing the USS Abraham Lincoln after an exceptionally long deployment supporting American military operations against Iran, according to an exclusive report by The Wall Street Journal.
The carrier rotation comes as Washington maintains substantial naval power in the region amid the continuing conflict with Iran and a U.S. blockade of Iranian ports.
According to the Journal, U.S. officials said the USS George Washington will replace the Lincoln under a previously planned rotation. The Lincoln has now been deployed for more than 250 days and has reportedly gone roughly 200 days without a port call.
The Lincoln began its scheduled deployment in November before being redirected to the Middle East in January ahead of the U.S. war with Iran. Its aircraft played a major role in Operation Epic Fury, the American bombing campaign against Iran, and the carrier subsequently took part in enforcing the blockade of Iranian ports.
Strain Aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln
The extended deployment has taken a toll on sailors aboard the Lincoln. Lawmakers have raised concerns over deteriorating conditions, including shortages of basic supplies, plumbing and water problems, disrupted mail service, safety concerns and declining morale and mental health among crew members, according to the Journal.
The concerns have prompted lawmakers, including Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Rep. Marlin Stutzman, to seek answers from the Pentagon regarding conditions aboard the carrier and the welfare of its sailors.
The USS George Washington, which has been operating in the Pacific, recently passed through the Strait of Malacca accompanied by guided-missile destroyers as it headed west toward its new assignment.
While the Pentagon’s carrier rotation was reportedly planned before concerns about the Lincoln became public, moving another American carrier toward the Middle East underscores Washington’s intention to preserve significant naval and air power in the region even as months of warfare place growing demands on U.S. forces.
