Pakistan Christians Concerned As Court Details Acquittals In Couple’s Burning Deaths

ISLAMABAD (Worthy News) – Pakistani Christians have expressed concern after Pakistan’s Supreme Court released details of its decision to acquit the last three men sentenced to death over the 2014 mob killing of a Christian couple who were beaten and burned alive in a brick kiln following blasphemy allegations.

The three men were acquitted on July 9, but the Supreme Court issued its detailed 26-page judgment this month, citing contradictions and gaps in the prosecution’s case and insufficient reliable evidence to sustain their convictions.

The court’s explanation came as Christians in Punjab province marked the third anniversary of massive attacks on churches and Christian homes in Jaranwala, renewing concerns about accountability for violence against the country’s Christian minority.

The three men — Muhammad Irfan, Mehdi Khan and Muhammad Riaz Kumbh — had challenged a May 16, 2019, Lahore High Court ruling that upheld death sentences imposed by an anti-terrorism court on November 23, 2016.

COURT CITES REASONABLE DOUBT

A three-judge Supreme Court bench acknowledged the “shocking and brutal” nature of the killings but said the prosecution failed to produce convincing evidence establishing the defendants’ guilt.

The judges stressed that the severity of a crime could not substitute for proof beyond reasonable doubt and said an innocent person should not be executed in the absence of reliable evidence.

The court also said there was no convincing evidence that Christian brick-kiln workers Shahzad Masih and his pregnant wife, Shama Bibi, had desecrated the Quran, as alleged before the attack.

The judges reiterated that the benefit of doubt was a legal right rather than a concession granted to an accused person, saying even a single circumstance creating reasonable doubt could require acquittal.

COUPLE BURNED ALIVE

Masih and Bibi, parents of three children, were attacked by a mob on November 4, 2014, at Kot Radha Kishan in Punjab province’s Kasur District.

According to the police case, the mob tore the roof off an office where the couple had taken refuge, dragged them outside and assaulted them before throwing them into the brick kiln’s furnace, where they burned to death.

Police who arrived at the scene were reportedly outnumbered and attacked, while witnesses, including relatives of the victims, were unable to intervene.

Officers initially registered a case involving 660 named and unidentified suspects following the killings.

PROSECUTION CASE QUESTIONED

The Supreme Court questioned several aspects of the prosecution’s evidence, including the absence of relatives of the victims as complainants and inconsistencies surrounding eyewitness testimony.

The judges also questioned why Irfan, whom witnesses later identified as the man who pushed the couple into the furnace, had not initially been named in the First Information Report, or FIR.

The court said there was a “lack of independent corroboration” supporting allegations against the three defendants and noted that they had not suffered burn injuries or been found wearing the protective wooden shoes and wet clothing reportedly required for people working close to the furnace.

Those circumstances created “reasonable doubt” about their involvement, the judges concluded.

OTHER ACQUITTALS UPHELD

The Supreme Court overturned the lower-court judgments, acquitted the three men of all charges and ordered their immediate release unless they were wanted in another case.

The court also dismissed an appeal by the Punjab government challenging the acquittal of 102 other suspects, saying it found no material illegality or misreading of evidence in the earlier decisions.

In 2016, an anti-terrorism court had sentenced five men to death and eight others to two years in prison. The Lahore High Court later acquitted two of the five death-row prisoners while maintaining the death sentences against the remaining three.

With the Supreme Court’s July 9 decision, no one remains convicted over the deaths of Masih and Bibi. The detailed reasoning for the acquittals was released August 13.

CHRISTIAN LAWYER RESPONDS

Senior Christian criminal lawyer Lazar Allah Rakha said the outcome should prompt scrutiny of how the case was prosecuted.

“This verdict should prompt serious reflection on how the prosecution was conducted,” Rakha said. “In a case involving such an egregious crime, meticulous trial preparation, effective examination and cross-examination of witnesses, and a comprehensive legal strategy were essential.”

He said deficiencies in those areas had weakened the prosecution and ultimately contributed to the acquittals.

The ruling’s detailed explanation emerged as Christians were also remembering the August 16, 2023, Jaranwala attacks, when mobs targeted a Christian community in Punjab following allegations of Quran desecration.

JARANWALA ANNIVERSARY

Churches and Christian homes were attacked and set ablaze, forcing families to flee amid fear, displacement and destruction. Three years later, Christian leaders say rebuilding damaged properties has not resolved demands for accountability and greater protection.

Pastor Imran Amanat, leader of the advocacy group LEAD Ministries, urged Pakistan’s federal and Punjab governments, law-enforcement agencies and judiciary to demonstrate that every citizen, regardless of religion, is entitled to equal protection under the law.

Christians, church leaders, human rights advocates and members of civil society gathered on August 16 to remember the attacks, express solidarity with affected families and peacefully press for justice.

In a statement to Worthy News, Amanat called for transparent investigations, protection for victims and witnesses, prosecution of those responsible through due process and stronger measures to prevent future attacks on religious minorities.

CHRISTIANS DEMAND JUSTICE

“Jaranwala has become a painful symbol of the vulnerability experienced by Pakistan’s Christian community. Yet it has also demonstrated the resilience of a community determined to remember, speak out peacefully, and continue seeking justice,” said Christian advocate Mushtaq Sardar Gill, founder of LEAD Ministries.

“Three years later, the question remains: When will the victims of Jaranwala finally see justice delivered?” Gill told Worthy News.

For many Pakistani Christians, Jaranwala has become a symbol of wider concerns about their vulnerability and the country’s controversial blasphemy laws.

Human rights advocates say the laws have been misused in personal disputes and property conflicts, while accusations themselves have repeatedly triggered mob violence, extrajudicial killings and prolonged detention of those accused.

BLASPHEMY LAW CONCERNS

Although no one has been executed by the Pakistani state under the country’s blasphemy statutes, accusations have repeatedly led to deadly vigilante violence against those accused.

International advocacy organizations have also continued to raise concerns about the treatment of Pakistan’s religious minorities.

Open Doors, a Christian advocacy organization, ranks Pakistan eighth on its 2026 World Watch List of 50 countries where Christians face the most severe persecution and discrimination.

The latest developments have left Christian leaders pressing authorities to ensure that the passage of time does not become a substitute for accountability and justice for attacks against their communities in the Muslim-majority nation.
