Egypt: Killed for a Cross

By Joseph DeCaro, Worthy News Correspondent

CAIRO, EGYPT (Worthy News)– On a Friday afternoon late last month, a young woman was killed over a cross after she drove to the Ain Shams neighborhood of Cairo to deliver food and medicine to the elderly, according to International Christian Concern.

Mary Sameh George — a 24-year-old lawyer who was to be engaged in May — was one of four people killed by Muslim protestors in Ain Shams on March 28.

According to ICC sources, the Muslim Brotherhood holds a weekly protest march in Ain Shams every Friday after prayers, but on this particular afternoon, Brotherhood supporters clashed with Egyptian security forces because 529 supporters of the Brotherhood had all been given death sentences for their participation in widespread violence across Egypt.

George had parked within sight of the Brotherhood demonstration and when its supporters saw a cross hanging in her car they violently removed her from the vehicle and viciously attacked her while shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

After killing George, they set her car on fire, but this violence has become commonplace in Ain Shams.

“Here in Ain Shams, we know that every Friday is a day of death,” a local told Coptic Solidarity.

George Farid, a lawyer for the George family, told MidEast Christian News that although relatives have filed a police report, no one has been arrested for Mary’s murder.
