India: ‘Freedom of Religion’ Law Fails

By Joseph DeCaro, Worthy News Correspondent

(Worthy News)– The failure of Hindu nationalists to pass a so-called freedom of religion law has been hailed as a victory for Christians and other religious minorities in India.

According to Barnabas Aid, Indian nationalists have long advocated for the implementation of a nationwide law to prevent Hindus from converting to Christianity and Islam. But similar laws in six Indian states have been used to falsely accuse Christians of converting Hindus to Christianity by force, or fraud.

India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party had promised to legislate a religious freedom law during last year’s election. But according to the Ministry of Law and Justice, the central government does not have the authority to introduce laws that fall under the jurisdictions of the Indian states.

Although Home Minister Rajnath Singh argued for more debate on the proposed law, Navaid Hamid — secretary of the South Asian Council for Minorities — said attempts to implement a religious freedom law revealed the ill intentions of India’s central government.
