(Worthy News) – Israel has developed a new high-energy laser that requires only electricity to operate, the Defense Ministry’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development revealed Wednesday.

The system, which is slated to supplement the Iron Dome system Israel currently uses to intercept intermittent barrages of rocket fire from Gaza and elsewhere, is capable of deflecting mortar shells, anti-tank missiles, and drones.

“We are entering a new age of energy warfare in the air, land, and sea,” said Directorate of Defense Research and Development Head Brig. Gen Yaniv Rotem, explaining that “as long as you have electricity, you will have a never-ending supply.”

Head of the Optronics Department for the Research and Development arm of Israel’s Defense Ministry Dubi Oster called the new technology “a dramatic solution to rocket fire.”
