(Worthy News) – A Nigerian professor-turned-politician claimed last week that Boko Haram has created nearly 120,000 orphans and widows since it began its onslaught against Christians in the West African nation.

Babagana Umara Zulum, now the governor of Borno state, spoke at the National Defense College in Abuja last week to present his paper “Strategic Leadership: The Challenges of Insurgency in Borno State” and comment on the government’s response to the Boko Haram crisis that has killed thousands of Christians.

“Some people will never tell you the truth when you are in power and honestly, many of us in power also do not want to hear the truth, we prefer to be told what we like to hear and that is a serious deficit in leadership in the country,” Zulum explained of the government’s response.

Christians in Nigeria sent an open letter to the government of President Muhammadu Buhari in recent weeks after the leader of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Lawan Andimi, was executed by Boko Haram following the release of a hostage video in which he praised God but also asked the government for rescue.

6,000 Christians have been murdered in Nigeria since 2015, according to the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART).
