Christians in India scapegoated for Catholic child trafficking scandal and Muslim forced marriages

(Worthy News) – In a tragic misunderstanding, the leader of a Hindu nationalist organization in India is vowing to prevent the spread of Christian faith across his country because of alleged child trafficking activities of the charity founded by Mother Theresa and purported forced conversions and marriages of Hindu girls by Muslim men.

Lumping together the common Indian believer with the Roman Catholic Missionaries of Charity, whose nuns were found to have sold four Indian children in 2018, Vishwa Hindu Parishad general secretary Milind Parande told the Times of India that nationalists would “not allow this heinous conspiracy to succeed.”

“[Christians] are destroying the ancient culture and indigenous religion of the tribals and are resorting to trafficking their children,” he said, associating Christians also with “issues like love jihad, where Hindu girls are lured to marry Muslims,” eroding a homogenous Hindu India through coercion and rape.

Christians in India have been beleaguered since the nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party gained power under the leadership of Narendra Modi in 2014, causing the once pluralistic nation to become a hotbed for a radical religious nationalism in which only Hinduism is allowed.

India is now number 10 on Open Doors USA’s World Watch List for persecution of Christians, having risen 21 spots since Modi was elected six years ago.
