Muslims irate about Christian conversions in eastern Uganda

(Worthy News) – Radical Muslims in eastern Uganda attacked the daughter of a Christian evangelist whose witness led a Muslim woman to the Lord, as another former Muslim woman was beaten by her family for her newfound faith.

On April 7th a mob beat and strangled Lydia Nabirye, 23, as she was on her way home from visiting a third former Muslim woman whose son had died.

“They held me and started beating me up,” she told Morning Star News. “They slapped me, and others hit me with sticks, saying that they were out to kill me because I was changing Muslims to become Christians.”

In another nearby village in eastern Uganda Sylvia Shamimu Nabafa, who became a Christian from listening to a radio preacher following a dream that made her “restless,” was beaten by her father Haji Juma Suleiman when a neighbor reported she had gone to church.

“I did not respond [to whether I was a Christian or not],” she said of her father’s subsequent interrogation. “He began hitting me with kicks and blows. He then took a blunt object and hit my right leg. I started bleeding, and the next thing I knew, I found myself in the hospital bed at Palissa Health Centre.”

Uganda is a majority Christian country that has only a 12% Muslim population, but because of a decentralized government, the eastern part of the nation has become “a self-governed sharia fiefdom,” according to Open Doors USA.
