(Worthy News) – Airstrikes that killed at least five Iranian-backed militiamen in Syria on Monday have been attributed to Israel, Ynet News reports. Israel has not confirmed it was behind the strikes, which reportedly hit targets near Damascus airport and the southern city of Daraa.

Discussing the strikes, the director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdul Rahman, told AFP: “At least six Israeli missiles hit several positions belonging to regime forces and pro-Iran militias south of Damascus.” The raids reportedly began at 10 pm and continued for over 15 minutes.

A military official quoted in Syrian state media said the raid was conducted by Israeli fighter jets and that Syrian air defenses had brought down most of the missiles, Ynet News reported. However, Rahman told AFP that: “Air defenses did not intercept a single target.”

According to two senior Syrian military defectors, one of the strikes was aimed at an important Iranian-run ammunition depot near the town of Kiswa, where Iranian Revolutionary Guards are entrenched south of Damascus. Other missiles targeted the towns of Muqaylabiya and Zakiya, where Lebanese pro-Iranian Hezbollah militants are based.

Although the Israelis have not claimed responsibility for the strikes, defense officials recently said Israel would accelerate strikes against Iran in Syria. The Iranian Islamic regime has repeatedly called for the destruction of Israel and is increasing its presence in Israel’s neighbor Syria through proxy militias.
