(Worthy News) – A new Gallup poll has shown American parents are divided along party lines when it comes to their views on the coronavirus pandemic, its effect on their children and on whether schools should reopen, the Washington Times reports. Among its findings, the poll showed that 85% of parents who identify as Democrats and 29% who identify as Republicans are concerned their child might contract COVID-19.

“As with many aspects of the coronavirus pandemic, attitudes are shaped to a large degree by politics,” the Gallup poll report says. Around 66% of Republican parents want their children back in full time, in-person school this fall. Only 13% of Democrat parents want this.

“Democratic parents are mostly divided in their preference between full-time remote learning and a modified system,” Gallup said.

The poll found that 37% of all American parents are “somewhat worried” their child will be infected with COVID-19 if they go back to school in the fall. Of these, 20% of Republicans, 43% of independents and 43% of Democrats agree.

Among other findings, the poll showed that 27% of all US parents are “very worried” their child will contract the virus at full time, in-person school this fall. Of these, 9% of Republicans, 22% of independents and 42% of Democrats agree.

A further 22% of all parents are “not too worried” their child will become sick if they go back to school this fall. Of these, 37% of Republicans, 23% of independents and 12% of Democrats agree. A final 14% of all parents are “not worried at all.” Of these, 33% of Republicans, 12% of independents and 3% of Democrats agree.
