Child survivors of Auschwitz holocaust concentration camp

(Worthy News) – A survey published last week has found that almost two-thirds of young adults in the US do not know that six million Jews were murdered by German Nazis during the Holocaust, Christian Headlines reported Monday. Commissioned by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, the poll surveyed Millennials and Gen Z adults ages 18-39 and involved 1,000 interviews nationwide and 200 interviews in each state.

Responding to multiple-choice questions with seven possible answers, only 37 percent of participants said six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust; 36 percent said the number of deaths was two million or less; 17 percent were not sure, Christian Headlines reported.

The poll found that 48 percent of respondents did not know the name of a single concentration camp, death camp, or ghetto during World War II; 44 percent knew Auschwitz was the most infamous camp.

Moreover, 49 percent said they had seen Holocaust denial or distortion on social media or on other online platforms. Twelve percent of respondents said they believed the number of Jews killed has been exaggerated; three percent said the Holocaust did not happen at all, Christian Headlines reported.

“The results are both shocking and saddening and they underscore why we must act now while Holocaust survivors are still with us to voice their stories,” President of the Conference Gideon Taylor said in a statement.

“We need to understand why we aren’t doing better in educating a younger generation about the Holocaust and the lessons of the past. This needs to serve as a wake-up call to us all, and as a road map of where government officials need to act.”
