Congress early Thursday confirmed the U.S. Electoral College votes for Biden despite allegations of irregularities and election fraud. In a tally read by Vice President Mike Pence, Biden received 306 electoral votes while President Trump won 232.

The joint session of Congress ended following a tumultuous Wednesday afternoon. A group of rioters claiming to be Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol as lawmakers debated whether to reject votes for Arizona, a critical battleground state.

At least four people were killed in the mayhem while police detained scores of people in the confrontation, law enforcement said.

Trump’s announcement that he accepted the results was aimed to restore a sense of calm in the U.S. and world markets ahead of another trading day at Wall Street.

“Many international investors [in the U.S.] come from countries with very different experiences of democracy, regime change, and the stability of the nation-state from that of the United States,” noted Paul Donovan, chief economist at investment bank UBS.

“It is perhaps inevitable that such investors will view events in the U.S. through the prism of their own experiences, and this may increase the risk that they see in U.S. assets,” he added in comments obtained by Worthy News.

Some legislators demanded Trump’s impeachment in the waning days of his current presidency following Wednesday’s clashes. Besides, several outlets reported that Cabinet members and allies talked about removing Trump by invoking the 25th amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Thursday’s comments were likely to ease tensions, however. Trump had asked his supporters to remain peaceful despite the alleged vote-rigging in the recent presidential poll.

Declared President-elect Joe Biden was due to be inaugurated as the 46th president of the United States on January 20th.
