(Worthy News) – The U.S. security chief imposed a 100-day pause on deportations Wednesday, rejecting concerns it could lead to a migration surge.

In a statement seen by Worthy News, acting U.S. Homeland Security Secretary David Pekoske made clear he carried out one of President Joe Biden’s most prominent campaign promises.

The pause followed an earlier directive Wednesday to halt the Remain-in-Mexico policy that supporters of that thinking said had helped solve the last migrant surge in 2019.

The halt was to take effect Friday and underscored a further reversal of the previous Trump administration migration policies.

“The pause will allow [the Department of Homeland Security] DHS to ensure that its resources are dedicated to responding to the most pressing challenges that the United States faces, including immediate operational challenges at the southwest border in the midst of the most serious global public health crisis in a century,” Pekoske wrote.

Security experts have reportedly expressed concern, warned that the pause could exacerbate the border situation. They fear a new surge of migrants eager to take advantage of more lax enforcement if they can get to the interior of the U.S.

Despite the controversy, the DHS was to begin a deportation moratorium on Friday “ lasting for the next 100 days while the agency revisits enforcement priorities”, the statement stressed.

Former President Trump had warned of Biden’s planned migration policies. Trump began building an anti-migration wall at the border with Mexico to halt the influx of thousands of migrants.

While most flee conflict and poverty, Trump also warned of dangerous criminals that he said mingled among migrants seeking a new life in the United States.
