(Worthy News) – A conviction of former U.S. President Donald J. Trump appeared unlikely as 45 Republican senators voted against holding an impeachment trial.

They suggested it would be unconstitutional to impeach a former president. All but five Republican senators supported a motion for a Senate vote on whether the trial violated the constitution.

The Democratic-led U.S. Senate blocked the motion tabled by Republican legislator Rand Paul in a 55-45 vote. But only a handful of Republican lawmakers joined Democrats to reject the move.

That was short of the 17 Republicans needed to convict Trump on an impeachment charge that he incited the January 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol that left five people dead.

“It’s one of the few times in Washington where a loss is actually a victory,” Paul later told reporters. “Forty-five votes means the impeachment trial is dead on arrival.”

The House voted to impeach Trump earlier this month on the sole impeachment charge of “incitement of insurrection.” Democrats claim he incited violence at the U.S. Capitol earlier this month.

However, critics say Trump also urged the protesters not to engage in violent acts and later told them to “go home in peace.”

Trump is the first president to be impeached twice and the first president to face an impeachment trial after leaving office.
