(Worthy News) – Syria’s official SANA news agency said Tuesday evening that Israel carried out airstrikes on targets in the Damascus area and southern Syria, Israel National News (INN) reports. In its report, SANA said Syria’s air defense systems had been activated due to “Israeli aggression,” and that several missiles had been intercepted.

Tuesday’s report follows a similar report last month, in which Syrian media said Israeli fighter jets had attacked Iranian targets near Damascus, INN said. This attack appeared to be retaliation for the shelling of an Israeli-owned ship in the Gulf of Oman, which had been attributed to Iran.

In late January, too, Syrian media outlets reported an Israeli airstrike in Hama, INN reports. According to a Syrian military source, this attack had come from the direction of Tripoli in Lebanon; the source said most of the missiles were intercepted.

Although Israel rarely confirms or denies the attacks, it has launched hundreds of strikes against Iran-linked targets in Syria, including facilities connected to Iran, and weapons convoys directed to Lebanon’s Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah.

The Israeli government considers the entrenchment in Syria of Iran-backed militia close to Israel’s northern border to be a major threat to Israel’s security: the Iranian regime has repeatedly and publicly called for the destruction of Israel.
