(Worthy News) – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday told the UN Security Council that Iran must be held accountable for the July 29 drone attack on the Mercer Street ship, an Israeli-managed oil tanker, Israel National News (INN) reports. Blinken described the strike as “part of a pattern of attacks and other provocative behavior” by Iran.

A Liberian-flagged, Japanese-owned petroleum product tanker managed by Israeli-owned Zodiac Maritime, the Mercer Street was located off the coast of Oman at the time of the attack. Two crew members, a Briton and a Romanian, were killed in the strike.

During his address to Monday’s virtual UN Security Council session, Blinken said the international community cannot allow Iran to act with “impunity,” INN reports. “It is on all of our nations to hold accountable those responsible.

Failing to do so will only fuel their sense of impunity and embolden others inclined to disregard the maritime order,” Blinken said.

Although Iran has denied all involvement in the attack, the Pentagon has concluded that the drone used in the Mercer Street attack was built in Iran, INN reports. On Friday, G7 Foreign Ministers issued a joint statement blaming Iran for the strike.

“All available evidence clearly points to Iran. There is no justification for this attack,” the G7 joint statement said.
