(Worthy News) – Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban says the United States has carried out an airstrike targeting a suicide bomber in a vehicle Sunday who wanted to attack the Kabul International airport.

American officials only confirmed the U.S. military had carried out a military strike in Kabul, the capital, but they did not give more details yet.

Smoke was seen billowing over Kabul following an explosion near the city’s Hamid Karzai International Airport on Sunday.

There were few initial details about Sunday’s incident, as well as a rocket that struck a neighborhood just northwest of the airport, killing a child, news reports say.

An Afghan official who spoke on condition of anonymity reportedly said the explosion appeared to have been caused by a rocket that hit home. It wasn’t immediately clear if the house that was hit was the target of the U.S. strike.

Earlier, a drone strike in Nangarhar Province over the weekend near the Pakistan border killed two members of the group, the Pentagon said.

U.S. President Joe Biden warned the United States retaliatory strike against the Islamic State group’s Afghan affiliate would not be the last.

The attacks are in response to a suicide bombing near Kabul’s airport on Thursday that killed as many as 170 civilians and 13 members of the American military.

Earlier Sunday, the United States Embassy in the Afghan capital said there was a “specific, credible threat” to the airport area.

Sunday’s announcements come amid the American military’s evacuation there, despite concerns about possible thousands of U.S.-supporting Afghans and Americans staying behind.
