(Worthy News) – A young man who had just come to faith in Christ in Kadama, Uganda was violently assaulted and severely injured by Muslim relatives enraged that he has left Islam, Morning Star News (MSN) reports. Assaults by Muslim family members against Christian converts have become an increasing concern in Uganda.

The grandson of a former Muslim sheikh, 20-year-old Sadi Bwanga had prayed to receive Jesus as Lord during a church service in Kadama, Kibuku District on February 6, MSN reports. Accompanied by a local evangelist (who name is withheld for security reasons), Bwanga was on his way to his home in the predominantly Muslim Bulocho village when he was accosted by relatives who heard he had been in church.

Bwanga’s relatives were in a car when they approached him and his evangelist friend. “One of them told me, ‘We know that you are a Christian, but our son is a Muslim – we do not want to see you here,’” the evangelist told MSN. “So I left immediately. Just a little distance away I heard loud screaming from Sadi crying for help.”

The relatives forced Bwanga into their car and drove away, causing the evangelist to raise the alarm. “I knew that they were going to kill my friend, so I alerted my pastor, who organized two vehicles immediately and we drove to Sadi’s home,” the evangelist told MSN. “On arrival, there were several people outside, but on seeing us they fled. We found Sadi outside his cottage lying in a pool of blood and half-naked at around 2:30 p.m., with serious head and leg injuries, but still alive.”

Bwanga was taken to Kadama Hospital and was released in February with an IV drip. However, his relatives destroyed his living quarters, the evangelist said. He is being monitored by a nurse at a safe undisclosed address. Local church leaders said they plan to inform the police. “We are planning to report this incident to the police as soon as Sadi recovers,” a pastor told MSN. “We need prayers on the next course of action to take.”
