(Worthy News) – US President Joe Biden pledged Tuesday that if Democrats do well enough in the upcoming midterm elections, he will prioritize sending a bill to the next Congress that would reinstate abortion rights removed when the US Supreme Court overturned the case of Roe v Wade earlier this year, Politico reports.

Biden can only make good on his pledge if the Democrats succeed in holding on to their narrow majority in the House and increase their majority in the Senate.

Biden made his promise at a Washington Democratic National Committee event while on the campaign trail ahead of next month’s critical midterm elections, Politico reports. Biden added that he would sign the bill into law in late January to coincide with the anniversary of the original Roe ruling in 1973.

“It is a vow that appears aimed at energizing Democrats to turn out in force in the upcoming midterm elections where the party is struggling to keep its slim majorities, as polls show early outrage over the fall of Roe v. Wade this June has been outstripped by economic concerns,” Politico writers Christopher Cadelago and Alice Miranda Ollstein noted.

“Biden has increasingly escalated his attacks on Republicans over abortion rights since the high court’s ruling this summer overturning Roe,” Cadelago and Ollstein said. “He’s repeatedly predicted that there will be a massive surge of voter activity in the midterms pushing back against the decision — particularly from women voters.”

Biden told Democrats recently that Republicans don’t understand the power of women, but that they are about to “find out.”
