(Worthy News) – Russia used Iranian-made drones in a wave of attacks targeting essential infrastructure in Ukraine over the New Year’s weekend, Ukrainian officials announced Monday.

Ukraine’s air force shot down 39 out of 40 Shahed-131/136 kamikaze drones headed specifically for power infrastructure in Ukraine’s capital city Kyiv, i24 News reports.

In a statement, mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko said 15 of the Iranian-made drones were taken down over nearby regions, three over the Kyiv region, and 22 over the city’s actual air space.

In a Telegram post on Monday, Oleksii Kuleba, head of the Kyiv region military administration, said: “Russians launched several waves of Shahed drones. Targeting critical infrastructure facilities. Air defense is at work.”

“There are emergency power outages in [Kyiv],” Kuleba added. Moreover, Kuleba said: “An injured 19-year-old man was hospitalized in the Desnyanskyi district of the capital.

Iran’s regime has previously denied supplying Russia with drones for attacking Russia, but in his address to the US Congress on December 21, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said: “Iranian deadly drones sent to Russia in the hundreds became a threat to our critical infrastructure. That is how one terrorist has found the other.”
