(Worthy News) – The UK is set to follow the United States in designating Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, Jewish News UK reports. With Tehran continually threatening the annihilation of Israel, a designation of the 250,000-strong IRGC as a terror organization has long been sought by British Jewish and pro-Israel groups.

In an address to members of the Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI) group last month, Britain’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak noted that Iran’s terror activity is not confined to the Middle East and that UK citizens are at risk too. “[The] National Cyber Security Centre has exposed IRGC-linked attacks on critical national infrastructure,” Sunak said.

“The head of MI5 has spoken of at least ten threats this year to kidnap or even kill UK-based individuals,” Sunak attested.

Moreover, Sunak said, the UK is committed to ensuring the Iranian regime does not acquire a nuclear weapon. “Under my leadership, the UK will not waver in our commitment to work with Israel and our allies to prevent Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon,” the PM assured the CFI gathering.

Britain’s Security Minister Tom Tugendhat has been in favor of designating the IRGC as a terror group for some time, Jewish News reports. As chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee (FAC), Tugendhat counseled in 2020 that the IRGC met the criteria for prescription in the Terrorism Act 2000 and that the designation was “a natural next step.”

In addition to the US, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain have also already proscribed the IRGC as a terror organization.
