At Least 10 Die In Mass Shooting In California

MONTEREY PARK (Worthy News) – At least 10 people died in an apparently racially motivated shooting at business premises in the U.S. state of California’s city of Monterey Park, police and witnesses said early Sunday.

Videos on social media showed a significant police presence in the area- about eight miles (13 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.

The shootings happened as thousands gathered in the city for the Monterey Park Lunar New Year festival. The suspect in the overnight shooting is male and fled the scene, authorities said.

Witnesses recalled that the shooting happened at a nearby dance studio where a gunman with a machine gun – or a semi-automatic rifle – fired multiple rounds at mostly Asian Americans.

Police cautioned it was “too early” to know the suspect’s motivation, though he chose his targets carefully.

Last night’s shooting was a “horrific act of gun violence,” California’s Governor Gavin Newsom said in a reaction. “Monterey Park should have had a night of joyful celebration of the Lunar New Year. Instead, they were the victims of a horrific and heartless act of gun violence,” he added on the social networking site Twitter.

“Our hearts mourn as we learn more about the devastating acts of last night. We are monitoring the situation closely,” the governor added.

The United States has been shocked by a series of mass shootings in recent months, fueling a debate on the many weapons in the nation.
