(Worthy News) – The Pentagon is actively researching and developing AI-controlled drones that are on the verge of gaining the ability to autonomously decide whether to eliminate human targets, according to the New York Times.

Nations such as the US and China are actively developing lethal autonomous weapons that employ AI to select targets.

Critics argue that the deployment of so-called “killer robots” represents a troubling advancement, as it would delegate life-and-death decisions on the battlefield to machines devoid of human input.

This alarming prospect has prompted numerous governments to raise awareness by proposing legally binding rules at the United Nations concerning the use of what military forces refer to as lethal autonomous weapons.

“This is really one of the most significant inflection points for humanity,” Alexander Kmentt, Austria’s chief negotiator on the issue, told the NY Times. “What’s the role of human beings in the use of force — it’s an absolutely fundamental security issue, a legal issue, and an ethical issue.”

OPEN Ai Head Removed, Then Re-Hired Over Possible Threats to Humanity

Meanwhile, observers noted the turbulent series of events at OpenAI, the startup company that developed ChatGPT.

In a surprising disclosure, CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman issued a letter to the board cautioning about a noteworthy advancement in an artificial intelligence project referred to as Project Q*, which led to his initial firing by the OpenAI board.

This previously undisclosed letter explicitly outlined the potential threats to humanity arising from the progress made in Project Q*.

ProjectQ* was perceived as a potential milestone in the quest for superintelligence, wherein AI systems exceed human cognitive capabilities.

Insiders at OpenAI indicate that the letter was among several factors leading to Altman’s removal, playing a significant role in a tumultuous sequence of events over a hectic five-day period at the startup company.

However, hundreds of OpenAi employees threatened to quit if Altman was not reinstated. The questions of his initial firing, rehiring, resignations of several key figures, and subsequent rehiring lead to questions about the development of Project Q*.

In an interview in July of 2023, acclaimed director James Cameron cautioned about the tangible risks reminiscent of his iconic 1984 film, The Terminator. Cameron emphasized the perils associated with the weaponization of artificial intelligence (AI) and the looming risk of an unmanageable global arms race. His ominous portrayal of an AI-driven combat theater presents a real and alarming threat to the stability of humanity.
