(Worthy News) – Israeli scientists have developed a ground-breaking immunotherapy approach to treating cancer that is effective in preventing the growth of secondary tumors after the removal of the primary tumor, Ynet News reports. Developed by researchers at Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science, the study is published in the scientific journal Cell.

The research combines various types of immune system cells, specifically dendritic cells (which collect information on invaders to the body) and T cells, in a treatment to fight cancer, Ynet reports. The scientists developed a new inhibitor which, along with the existing cancer treatment, enhanced the activity of dendritic cells in the tumor microenvironment.

The researchers found that the link between T cells and dendritic cells triggers a strong immune response against cancer, and that memory immune cells that can identify and respond to cancer even after treatment, Ynet said.

“This understanding allowed us to develop a completely unique method,” Dr. Rony Dahan, a lead researcher on the study, said in a statement.. “Our approach differs from others in the field; rather than developing treatments that target existing cells, we are creating a treatment that links two different immune cells.”

“Never before has such a treatment been developed that connects two cells of the immune system,” Dahan said. “This is a significant scientific breakthrough, and progress with engineered inhibitors is very exciting.”
