(Worthy News) – In a show of solidarity with the Jewish people amid Israel’s war against Hamas, Argentina’s newly elected President Javier Milei announced this week that he will be moving the Argentinian embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the Times of Israel (TOI) reports.

The leader of Argentina’s right-wing Libertarian party, Milei, made his announcement during a visit to Israel on Tuesday, his first bilateral visit since his election in December. Milei has said he intends to bring Argentina closer to the US and Israel and away from geo-political ties with China. He also supports Ukraine against the ongoing Russian invasion.

Israel has always asserted that Jerusalem, not Tel Aviv, is its capital city since Biblical times. The Arab and Islamic worlds vehemently dispute this assertion, and it lies at the center of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. For varying diplomatic and political reasons, the vast majority of countries keep their embassies in Tel Aviv. Only the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Papua New Guinea, and Kosovo have embassies in Jerusalem.

While no practical steps have yet been taken to move Argentina’s embassy to Jerusalem, Milei, who has considered converting to Judaism, had made it an electoral campaign issue. An Israeli diplomat told TOI that Milei’s “positive statement” is “important,” and “we look forward to Argentina opening the sixth embassy in Jerusalem.”

Meeting Milei at Ben Gurion Airport, Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz told him: “You are a person of values who is committed only to the truth, and it is no wonder that you chose to come to Israel right away to support us in the just struggle for the defense of the Jewish people against the murderers of Hamas.”
