(Worthy News) – Vandals in Dordogne, France heavily defaced a village cemetery and war memorial on Sunday night, spraying Islamic graffiti, including the phrase ‘France is already Allah’s’ on 58 graves among other consecrated sites, the Daily Mail reports.

Local residents and visitors at the Clermont-d’Excideuil cemetery in Périgord Vert, Dordogne were reportedly shocked and distressed to find the desecration on Monday morning.

In addition to the cemetery’s 58 graves and war memorial, an adjacent church, a Calvary, and a fountain were discovered to have Islamic slogans sprayed on them. The phrases: “Submit to Allah,” “Happy Ramadan, non-Muslims,” “Ramadan Mubarak,” as well as “France is already Allah’s,” were sprayed across the sites. Two of the tombs had the word ‘GWER’ – meaning white person, non-Muslim or westerner in Algerian Arabic.

“People came to see the tombs of their ancestors, of their elders, which were dedicated to eternal rest and ultimately which were disturbed,” Alexandre Caillé of the SOS Calvaires association told the Daily Mail. “What is important is the symbol: we are talking about the war memorial, about people who fought for France to be free. People are really outraged, shocked, even traumatized for some.”

The public prosecutor of Périgueux, Jacques-Edouard Andrault, has announced the opening of an investigation into what he described as “aggravated damage,” the Daily Mail said.
