(Worthy News) – A former Muslim evangelist was murdered in Kenya earlier this month by Islamic extremists enraged that he had been leading Muslims to faith in Christ, Morning Star News reports.

A resident of Bugiri, Uganda, evangelist Ismail Wafula was murdered on March 8 during an attack on himself and three fellow evangelists after they spent four days preaching the Gospel in Busia, Kenya, close to the Ugandan border, MSN reports.

The missionary team were on their way home when they were ambushed by a group of at least 10 Islamic extremists who blocked their way, a survivor, evangelist Rooney Masaba told MSN. “The attackers began asking us many questions and said not to involve Muslims in open-air outreach,” Masaba said.

“The Muslims further questioned us that they were not happy about the conversion of their fellow Muslims, especially their relatives during their door-to-door mission outreach,” Masaba continued. “This led the discussion getting more tense, and there and then one of the Muslims got hold of Ismail Wafula and pierced him with a sharp knife on the neck, chest and in the stomach, and he sustained terrible wounds on the head. He then fell down bleeding.”

Other members of the Islamic mob tore the Christians’ Bibles up and began assaulting the remaining missionaries. “We started screaming, wailing and calling for help,” Masaba said. “Thank God there came an approaching vehicle that arrived as well as some people living close by.”

The attackers escaped and the Christians were taken to hospital where Wafula was pronounced dead, MSN reports.

While Christianity is the majority religion in Kenya, Muslims who leave Islam for Christ are particularly to Islamic persecution in the country, as are evangelists.
