(Worthy News) – Asserting the exercise was not connected to “current world events,” the United States last week “successfully” test-fired two unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles from a Space Force base in California, Defense News reports. The Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) system was launched in the 1970s and, despite its age, is expected to remain in use until the 2030s.

Last week’s tests involved the US Air Force and Space Force and took place on June 4 and June 6 from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, Defense News reports.

Reporting that the drills had been “successful,” Col. Chris Cruise of the Air Force Global Strike Command said in a June 4 press statement: “The U.S. nuclear enterprise is the cornerstone of security for our allies and partners across the globe.”

“Today’s test launch is just one example of how our nation’s ICBMs, and the professional Airmen who maintain and operate them, demonstrate the readiness and reliability of the weapon system,” Cruise noted. “It showcases our commitment to deterrence as we stand on continuous alert, 24/7/365.”

The reentry vehicle of each missile traveled some 4,200 miles to the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site on the Kwajalein Atoll, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Defense News said.
