(Worthy News) – While Israel continues to prepare and brace for a threatened attack by Iran, the United States has deployed a second aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, to the Middle East to help defend the Jewish state if necessary.

Iran has been threatening to attack Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31. While Israel has neither confirmed or denied its involvement in Haniyeh’s death, Iran blames the Israelis for it.

Escorted by guided missile destroyers and equipped with F-35 Fighter jets, the USS Lincoln arrived in the Middle East on Wednesday (August 21), CBS News reports. The USS Lincoln joins other US ships in the region, including the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier, which arrived in July.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has also ordered the USS Georgia, a guided missile submarine, to be deployed to the Middle East, CBS News said. The USS Georgia is expected to arrive in the region in the coming days.

In a statement Tuesday, Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder said the recent deployments are “for ensuring that we have the forces in theater to respond to something if it happens now, but also ensuring we have forces in theater to be able to respond to whatever could be next in terms of potential escalation and trying to de-escalate the situation.”
