(Worthy News) – Israel has confirmed the first-ever operational use of high-powered laser defense systems to intercept Hezbollah drones during recent clashes along the Lebanese border, marking a groundbreaking shift in modern warfare.

The Israeli Defense Ministry, the IDF, and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems jointly announced the deployment of laser technology as part of the country’s multi-layered air defense strategy. Developed over decades by Rafael and the Defense Ministry’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development (MAFAT), the lasers were used by air defense units to neutralize multiple aerial threats posed by the Iran-backed militant group.

“Israel is the first country in the world to present a large-scale operational laser interception capability,” said Brig. Gen. (res.) Dr. Daniel Gold, head of MAFAT. “The vision of the laser was demonstrated during the war with immense operational and technological success.”

Defense officials praised the system’s cost-effectiveness and rapid response time, highlighting it as a complementary tool to Israel’s existing missile-based systems like Iron Dome and David’s Sling. The new laser weaponry provides a significant advantage in countering the growing use of drones in asymmetric warfare.

Brig. Gen. Yehuda Almakaies, head of MAFAT’s R&D division, described the operation as a “first global operational success” for laser systems, adding that combat conditions enabled real-time learning and swift integration. He indicated plans to broaden deployment across both civilian and military sectors.

Central to the breakthrough is Rafael’s “Iron Beam,” a laser system built on proprietary adaptive optics technology. Although still pending full delivery to the IDF later this year, its successful deployment has already made an operational impact.

“We are very proud of this operational and technological breakthrough,” said Dr. Yuval Steinitz, chairman of Rafael. “Iron Beam will be a game-changer that will have an unprecedented impact on the modern battlefield.”

Rafael CEO Yoav Turgeman echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that laser interception would revolutionize air defense dynamics, offering speed, precision, and affordability unmatched by conventional systems.

Brig. Gen. G., commander of the IDF’s Air Defense Array, called the achievement “a source of national pride,” and credited the success to years of innovation and dedication.

The use of laser technology to counter Hezbollah drone incursions represents a major leap forward in Israel’s defense posture, as the country continues to confront evolving threats from Iran and its regional proxies.
