MOSCOW/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Russia has added a U.S.-based Christian ministry focused on evangelizing children and caring for minors to its list of “undesirable organizations,” raising concerns about the safety of its workers as well as churches and organizations using the ministry’s materials, sources told Worthy News.

Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) was designated an “undesirable organization” after the detention of South Korean missionary Park Tae-yeon, a Christian with ties to the ministry who was arrested on January 15 on charges that could carry a prison sentence of up to 17 years, according to Christians familiar with the case.

“The retired missionary’s trial is scheduled to begin on July 28,” after CEF was placed on the government’s list of “undesirable organizations” on July 7, advocacy group Voice of the Martyrs Korea (VOMK) confirmed.

Under Russia’s new policy, possessing or distributing CEF materials, providing financial support, or maintaining any other association with the ministry could result in criminal prosecution, said Hyun Sook Foley, a representative of VOMK.

In remarks shared with Worthy News, Pastor Eric Foley of VOMK said he was surprised by the government’s actions.

CHRISTIAN MINISTRY TARGETED

“Her activity hasn’t changed for more than 30 years. The only thing that has changed is that now Russian authorities call people like her ‘extremists,’ ‘brainwashers,’ and ‘conspirators against Russia,’ despite all common-sense evidence to the contrary,” he said.

Park’s charges are officially related to “immigration matters,” and Child Evangelism Fellowship is not mentioned in the indictment. However, Christians following the trial told Worthy News they fear the case could be used “to gather information about individuals, churches and organizations with ties to the ministry.”

VOMK has launched a petition calling for Park’s immediate release, with plans to present it to the Russian Embassy in South Korea.

In a statement shared with Worthy News, Christians involved in the case urged believers worldwide to pray that the missionary “will soon be able to return home to South Korea as originally planned” and to remember Russian Christians and churches facing growing pressure.

The reported crackdown on Christian ministry among children comes amid broader concerns that Russian authorities are tightening control over what children are taught and how they are expected to think while the country continues its war against neighboring Ukraine.

GROWING STATE CONTROL

The pressure has extended beyond Christian ministries. Several independent journalists, writers, artists, and filmmakers have left Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, citing increasing censorship and government repression.

Among them is award-winning documentary co-director Pavel Talankin, who fled Russia after secretly filming how schoolchildren were exposed to pro-war indoctrination in a Russian school for the Oscar-winning documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin.

He has since warned of growing censorship and repression under President Vladimir Putin’s government.

The latest developments are expected to deepen concerns among religious freedom advocates, who say the growing pressure on groups such as Child Evangelism Fellowship could expose Russian Christians with even indirect links to these ministries to criminal investigation or prosecution.
