From New York to Los Angeles, and from Dallas to Philadelphia, protesters filled streets, parks, and plazas, waving flags, holding signs, chanting, drumming, and in some cities, clashing with law enforcement. Organizers claimed hundreds of events drew millions nationwide.
In Philadelphia, demonstrators marched from Love Park to the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s iconic “Rocky” steps. Speakers, including Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), Martin Luther King III, and Andrea King Waters, addressed the crowd. “This is not patriotism. This is performance. This is not leadership. This is illusion,” Waters declared, referencing the Trump administration’s actions in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles saw thousands gather outside City Hall and march through the streets amid chants of “No kings, no crowns, we will not bow down.” While the day began peacefully, police used tear gas and batons to disperse lingering crowds near federal buildings after the formal event ended. Protesters carried satirical puppets, piñatas, and even a giant baby balloon depicting Trump.
In Dallas, demonstrators gathered under the midday sun at Akard Plaza, displaying both Mexican and Palestinian flags in a call for solidarity across communities. A lone Trump supporter stood near the protests, drawing jeers but no violence.
Elsewhere, Phoenix, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Portland hosted large turnouts. Portland police declared a riot late in the day after fires were set near a federal immigration building. Tear gas and crowd-control measures were used to disperse protesters.
The day was not without violence. In Culpepper, Virginia, police arrested a driver who intentionally accelerated his SUV into a crowd, injuring one person. In Salt Lake City, a shooting during the march left one critically injured and led to multiple arrests. Authorities are investigating whether the incident was politically motivated.
Governors across the country, including in Texas, Minnesota, and Arizona, deployed National Guard troops or warned of consequences for violent behavior. Some events in Minnesota were canceled after a gunman shot two state lawmakers, killing one.
Despite the scattered confrontations, organizers of the “No Kings” protests praised the largely peaceful demonstrations. “Today, across red states and blue, rural towns and major cities, Americans stood in peaceful unity and made it clear: we don’t do kings,” the No Kings Coalition said in a statement.
