Trump Shortens Deadline for Putin to End Ukraine War, Threatens New Sanctions

by Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Staff
(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump on Monday issued a sharp ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin, giving him just 10 to 12 days to agree to a cease-fire in Ukraine or face a new round of crippling economic measures from the United States. The revised warning significantly shortens the original 50-day deadline Trump announced earlier this month.
Speaking alongside U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer at his Turnberry golf course, Trump expressed deep frustration with Putin, accusing him of saying the right things in private conversations while continuing deadly assaults on Ukrainian cities. “We thought we had that settled numerous times,” Trump said, visibly irritated. “And then President Putin goes out and starts launching rockets into some city–bodies lying all over the street.”
The president said he no longer saw value in continuing diplomatic engagement with Putin if actions failed to match rhetoric. “He talks with such nice conversation, such respectful and nice conversations. And then, people die the following night,” Trump said. “I’m not so interested in talking anymore.”
Trump originally threatened to impose secondary tariffs on Russia’s trading partners if the Kremlin did not move toward peace by early September. But with Russian forces intensifying their summer offensive and launching strikes on civilian targets–including nursing homes and residential areas–the president said the time for waiting had passed. “We just don’t see any progress being made,” he said. “If you know what the answer is going to be, why wait?”
The revised deadline marks a major escalation in Trump’s pressure campaign. He confirmed that if Putin fails to act, the U.S. will move ahead with severe sanctions and tariffs. “It would be sanctions and maybe tariffs, secondary tariffs,” he said. “I don’t want to do that to Russia. I love the Russian people. They’re great people. I don’t want to do this to Russia.”
Trump’s remarks suggest growing disillusionment with Putin, despite previous confidence in their personal rapport. His administration recently reached an agreement with NATO to expand weapons and missile deliveries to Ukraine, further signaling a shift in posture.
During Monday’s meeting in Scotland, Trump and Starmer also discussed the crisis in Gaza. The British prime minister, fresh off meetings with European leaders, is reportedly urging Trump to press Israel toward a cease-fire. France has already pledged to recognize a Palestinian state if a truce is reached, and the U.K. may follow suit.
On the Ukraine front, Kyiv has welcomed Trump’s tough stance. Ukrainian officials previously said the 50-day timeline was too lenient, and they view Trump’s threat of sanctions as an essential component of holding Moscow accountable. Despite battlefield losses and a struggling military, Ukraine has shown no sign of ceding territory or halting its resistance.
Putin, for his part, has demanded that any peace deal include Ukraine’s full withdrawal from the four territories annexed by Russia in 2022, along with Kyiv’s permanent renunciation of NATO membership–conditions Ukraine and its allies flatly reject.
With Russia still holding approximately 20% of Ukraine and continuing its offensive operations, the coming days will be a critical test of Trump’s leverage–and of whether Putin will finally blink.
