Spain Bars U.S. Military Flights From Airspace Amid Iran War Dispute

(Worthy News) – Spain has formally blocked U.S. military aircraft involved in the Iran conflict from using its airspace and bases, marking a significant rift between NATO allies as tensions escalate in the Middle East.

Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles said Monday that Madrid had made its position clear from the outset of the conflict, denying authorization for both U.S. aircraft and operations tied to the war.

“This was made perfectly clear to the American military from the very beginning,” Robles said. “Neither the bases are authorized, nor is the use of Spanish airspace authorized for any actions related to the war in Iran.”

The decision includes a ban on fighter jets, refueling aircraft, and any U.S. planes operating from third countries if they are connected to the conflict.

Spain Rejects Use of Strategic Bases

Spain’s refusal extends to two of Washington’s most critical military installations in Europe — Naval Station Rota and Morón Air Base — both of which play a key role in supporting U.S. operations across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed the move before parliament, stating that all flight plans linked to operations in Iran had been rejected.

“We have denied the United States the use of the Rota and Morón bases for this illegal war,” Sánchez said.

Spain’s government maintains that the conflict was initiated unilaterally and violates international law, a position echoed by Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo, who warned the war is already inflicting severe economic damage across Europe.

Sánchez added that the conflict is costing Spanish firms an estimated €100 billion in losses within weeks, underscoring growing economic concerns across the continent.

Broader European Reluctance Emerges

Spain is not alone in distancing itself from the U.S.-led effort.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius recently described the conflict as an economic “catastrophe,” emphasizing that Germany does not want to be drawn further into the war.

Similarly, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated publicly that Britain would not be “dragged into” the escalating conflict.

The divide recalls earlier NATO fractures, such as opposition from France and Germany during the Iraq War in 2003, highlighting renewed strains within the alliance.

U.S. Pushes Forward Despite Resistance

Despite Spain’s refusal, the United States has secured alternative basing arrangements, including access to RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom, allowing operations to continue.

President Donald Trump responded sharply to Spain’s move, reportedly directing officials to sever trade ties with Madrid.

“We don’t want anything to do with Spain,” Trump said.

A White House official added that U.S. forces are meeting or exceeding operational objectives under “Operation Epic Fury” and do not require Spanish support.

As the war continues, Spain’s decision underscores a widening geopolitical divide within the West—raising questions about alliance unity at a time of escalating global conflict.
