Israel Expands Lebanon Buffer Zone as Ceasefire Talks Stall

(Worthy News) – Israel will expand its buffer zone in southern Lebanon while continuing military operations against Hezbollah, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Wednesday, following a security cabinet meeting that ended without a ceasefire agreement.

Netanyahu said the buffer zone would also stretch eastward, emphasizing that the move would help Israel “better assist our Druze brothers in their time of need.” The announcement comes as Israeli forces intensify operations in southern Lebanon, particularly around the strategic town of Bint Jbail, which Netanyahu described as “the capital of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.” He indicated that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are close to capturing the area.

The prime minister framed ongoing negotiations with Lebanon as a direct result of Israel’s military strength, stating the dual objectives are dismantling Hezbollah and securing a lasting peace. “Peace through strength,” Netanyahu declared.

Despite international pressure, including a U.S. request for a temporary ceasefire, Israeli leadership appears divided but leaning against halting operations. Several cabinet ministers have opposed any pause in fighting, with some calling for an even broader military campaign.

Earlier reports from Hezbollah-affiliated outlets suggested a ceasefire could be imminent, possibly lasting one week and coinciding with a temporary pause in U.S.-Iran tensions. However, Israeli officials denied any such agreement was in place, reinforcing that no ceasefire plans are currently active.

Meanwhile, Israel remains in close coordination with the United States regarding Iran. Netanyahu reiterated shared objectives with Washington, including removing enriched nuclear material from Iran and dismantling its enrichment capabilities. He also stressed the importance of reopening key maritime routes, likely referencing the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Adding to rising regional tensions, IDF Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Effie Defrin warned that Israel is prepared to resume strikes against Iran if necessary. He also stated that Hezbollah has been significantly weakened by recent Israeli operations and is now in retreat.

“Hezbollah terrorists thought they could hide and be protected and immune,” Defrin said. “They are not.”

Lebanese officials acknowledged ongoing diplomatic efforts but said details remain unclear. Hezbollah representatives suggested that Iranian pressure and broader regional negotiations could still produce a ceasefire, though no firm commitments have been made.
