Deadly Russian Strikes Damage Ancient Kyiv Cathedral; Zelensky Condemns ‘Crime Against Christian Culture’
by Stefan J. Bos, Worthy News Europe Bureau Chief
KYIV/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia on Monday of committing “one of the biggest Russian crimes against Christian culture today” after a massive missile and drone attack damaged an ancient cathedral in Kyiv and left nearly a dozen people dead across Ukraine.
The strikes came despite renewed diplomatic efforts by U.S. President Donald J. Trump to encourage peace talks aimed at ending a war that is now in its fifth year.
Zelensky said Russia launched some 70 missiles and 611 drones in the latest wave of attacks, including strikes that damaged the historic Dormition Cathedral, part of the centuries-old Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery complex.
The cathedral, dating back to the 11th century, is located within a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most important spiritual landmarks in Eastern Christianity.
“This is how Russia shows the world its intention to continue the war,” Zelensky said in remarks monitored by Worthy News.
CHRISTIAN LANDMARK
Images from the scene showed a gaping hole in one side of the cathedral, while flames were seen rising from its partially destroyed roof before firefighters extinguished the blaze.
The cathedral stands at the heart of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a monastery founded in 1051 and regarded as one of the most important spiritual centers of Orthodox Christianity.
Russia denied deliberately targeting the cathedral.
Russian officials claimed that a U.S.-made Patriot air-defense missile may have struck the site after malfunctioning, though they provided no evidence to support the allegation.
The attack drew swift international condemnation.
WAR CRIMES CLAIMS
French President Emmanuel Macron said on social media that “nothing justifies this attack on our universal heritage.”
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the strike on the cathedral and attacks on civilians as “war crimes.”
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, known as UNESCO, also condemned the damage to what it called one of Ukraine’s most significant spiritual and cultural landmarks.
“Damage to such institutions deprives communities of access to culture, education and shared spaces that are essential for recovery and social cohesion,” the agency said.
The cathedral has suffered before. During World War II, it was almost entirely destroyed and later rebuilt. Earlier this year, Russian attacks also damaged several buildings within the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra complex, according to Ukraine’s Culture Ministry.
DEADLY STRIKES
The attack also struck residential areas and infrastructure in Kyiv, leaving more than 140,000 residents without electricity, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Authorities said the attacks killed at least 11 people, including four in Kyiv. Five rescue workers died while battling a fire caused by a separate Russian strike on the northeastern city of Kharkiv. Several others were reported killed elsewhere.
At least 23 people were wounded in Kyiv, while a total of 53 people were injured nationwide, Zelensky said.
The latest escalation came a day after Trump held separate telephone conversations with Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin in an effort to revive peace negotiations.
Zelensky described his discussion with Trump as “detailed” and said the two leaders explored possible paths toward ending the conflict.
TRUMP PEACE PUSH
Trump reportedly told Putin that the United States remained ready to assist in negotiations.
However, the Kremlin said Putin believes Zelensky and European leaders attending this week’s Group of Seven (G7) summit in France are likely to prolong rather than resolve the conflict.
The renewed violence is expected to feature prominently during discussions among world leaders at the G7 gathering.
Zelensky urged allies to respond decisively.
“The response should be decisive and meaningful: more pressure on the aggressor and more assistance to Ukraine with air defense, primarily with anti-ballistic missiles,” he said.
WAR CONTINUES
Elsewhere, Russian officials confirmed that a Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian city of Tula killed three people and wounded three others, including a one-year-old child.
Russia’s military acknowledged that its own “massive strike” had targeted Ukrainian military facilities.
Air raid alerts were activated across much of Ukraine as authorities warned of continuing threats.
The latest attacks underscored the continuing intensity of Europe’s largest armed conflict since World War II, despite growing international efforts to secure a negotiated settlement.
